DEEP SEA FISHING GUIDE
South Padre Island has a mild sub-tropical climate so you can enjoy deep sea fishing throughout the year. The time of year, seasonal fish migrations, and state and federal fishing regulations will determine which species are targeted.
The continental shelf happens to be relatively narrow just off our area, so that we can reach the deepest waters where we're most likely to find the fish. The cold, nutrient-rich water from the deeper regions of the Gulf occurs at the edge of the continental shelf and at other topographical features like undersea mountains or canyons. Other good areas to fish are the reefs, oilrigs, wrecks, the gulf stream and behind commercial shrimp boats. Many large species of sport fish follow behind these boats to feed off of the baitfish they stir up; it's a great place to hook some ling.
There are several species accessible just a few miles offshore these include shark, mahi mahi, grouper, Spanish mackerel, tuna, kingfish, amberjack, cobia, dolphin, barracuda, tarpon, and snapper.
The big billfish like marlin, sailfish and swordfish are found in the clear blue waters. At times the blue water of the Gulf Stream can be as far out as sixty miles, and sometimes we are fortunate enough to have it right off the beach. The distance varies from day to day and seasons. The closer to shore the better, this means more time is spent fishing these productive waters giving us a better chance of hooking the big fish we're looking for.
